Job Purpose
To accurately typeset and paginate STEM journal articles using Adobe InDesign within an XML-based production workflow, following journal-specific templates, style specifications, and production standards, and to deliver high-quality publication-ready PDF and digital outputs.
• Ensure accurate placement, sequencing, and formatting of figures, tables, equations, references, and other article elements.
• Maintain consistency in fonts, styles, spacing, alignment, headings, captions, running heads, page numbers, and other layout elements.
• Handle complex tables, multi-column layouts, equations, and technical content while maintaining the required page quality.
• Resolve pagination and composition issues, including page breaks, widows/orphans, figure placement, table overflow, equation alignment, and excessive white space.
• Incorporate author, editor, and peer-review corrections accurately in the InDesign production files while maintaining consistency with the XML/source content.
• Prepare first proofs and subsequent corrected proofs according to the production schedule.
• Coordinate closely with Pre-editing, Copyediting, QC, and XML teams to resolve content and workflow issues.
• Follow journal-specific style guides, templates, SOPs, XML guidelines, and production workflows.
• Maintain proper file/version control throughout the production cycle.
• Meet defined productivity, quality, and turnaround-time targets.

Key Responsibilities
• Perform detailed quality control of STEM journal articles produced through XML and Adobe InDesign workflows.
• Compare source content against the InDesign composition and final PDF to identify content and formatting discrepancies.
• Check the correct sequencing and numbering of figures, tables, equations, references, sections, and other article elements.
• Verify that content has been accurately reflected in the InDesign layout and final PDF.
• Identify missing, duplicated, misplaced, or incorrectly formatted content during the XML-to-InDesign production process.
• Check page composition, including fonts, styles, spacing, alignment, headings, captions, running heads, page numbers, and overall journal layout.
• Check complex tables, equations, multi-column layouts, figures, and other STEM content for composition and formatting errors.
• Identify pagination issues such as inappropriate page breaks, widows/orphans, figure placement, table overflow, excessive white space, and equation alignment.
• Verify that author, editor, and peer-review corrections have been correctly incorporated into the production files.
• Perform proof checks on first proofs and subsequent corrected proofs.
• Conduct PDF-to-source comparison to ensure that no content has been lost or unintentionally changed during production.
• Check consistency between Pre-editing, copyediting, InDesign, PDF, and online publication outputs, where applicable.
• Work closely with Paginators, XML, Editorial, and Production teams to identify and resolve errors.
• Record errors accurately using defined QC procedures and checklists.
• Recheck corrected files and confirm that all reported errors have been addressed.
• Follow journal-specific style guides, XML guidelines, templates, SOPs, and production specifications.
• Identify recurring errors and provide feedback to the production team to improve quality and reduce rework.

• Ensure citations, references, figures, and tables appear in the correct sequential order.
• Check figure captions, table titles, equations, float anchors, and citations.
• Verify mandatory statements, such as funding, conflicts of interest, ethics, author contributions, and data availability, where applicable.
• Make corrections using Track Changes and raise clear author or editorial queries for missing or unclear information.
• Follow journal style sheets, checklists, customer instructions, and turnaround times.
